George Sand Today

Below are some manifestations of George Sand — her work and life  in popular culture and modern times. This page will stay relatively static, but if you want to stay in touch with Sand in today’s world follow me on Twitter, @anniklafarge.

TalkBack-2

Watch the “talkback” with the non-binary cast and director of “Gabriel,” a work about gender identity that George Sand wrote just after the complex sojourn on Majorca. It was staged by Head Trick Theatre in Providence, RI in 2018, and directed by Rebecca Maxfield. I write about it at some length in chapter six, “Pulling out the Pickaxe.”

Mon-Carnet-George-Sand

My favorite resource about George Sand is the website Mon Carnet George Sand, which contains a rich, deeply researched and sourced, set of sections devoted to her life, home, friends, garden, and of course Chopin. The site is written in French, but even if don’t read in that language the photographs — archival and contemporary — are glorious and tell much of the story themselves. It’s a true labor of life, intelligently curated and beautifully presented.

Artwork Rone RoomWithAView

Electronic music producer Rone conceived his 2019 album “Room With a View” at George Sand’s home in Nohant, where he was inspired by her gardens and other aspects of the landscape, as well as Chopin’s music. See here for more information and sample tracks, and here for a video.
